Profile

John is a pre-eminent workers’ compensation lawyer, having practiced in the field for more than 35 years.  He advises on the defence of workers’ compensation claims and advises on risk management and policy issues.  He assists clients to reduce workplace injuries and claims costs and manages workers’ compensation premiums and self-insurer licence issues.

John acts for a number of major self-insurers including public sector clients, Qantas Airways and one of Australia’s largest banks. 

John’s approach to workers’ compensation claims is highly efficient and business focused.  He is mindful of the need for clients to have these claims dealt with expeditiously, with a significant focus on settlement prior to hearing.  His approach extends beyond effective claims management, with the provision of on-site training and seminars to facilitate compliance with existing health and safety requirements within the workplace.  He also assists clients to implement effective risk management programs. 

John has advised financial institutions on Workers’ Compensation as follows:

• Determination of liability: Advice on decisions concerning determination of liability.
• Weekly compensation payments, including entitlements to, discontinuance, reduction and review of those payments. 
• Compensation for medical expenses: Advises on entitlements to medical and related expenses.
• Commutations/redemptions: When appropriate, focuses on achieving a commutation.
• Dispute resolution:  Has considerable experience in alternative dispute resolution to identify appropriate matters for early resolution and pursues settlement discussion on a case by case basis. 
• Lump sum compensation:  Advised on the relevant legislative provisions in respect of permanent impairment compensation.
