Direct Offshore Foreign Insurers

On 21 June 2007, the Financial Sector Legislation Amendment (Discretionary Mutual Funds and Direct Offshore Foreign Insurers) Bill 2007 was introduced into Parliament. The Bill implements and sets out the framework for the reforms to the regulation of Discretionary Mutual Funds (DMFs) and Direct Offshore Foreign Insurers (DOFIs) announced on 3 May 2007. The new regulation is proposed to commence on 1 July 2008. These measures will affect DOFIs, Australian insureds who use DOFIs, intermediaries and reinsurers.

Representatives of the Wik and Wik Way native title holders, the Aurukun Shire Council, the Queensland Government and the Aluminum Corporation of China Limited (CHALCO) finalised on Friday 25 May in Western Cape York, Australia, a landmark Indigenous Land Use Agreement as part of CHALCO's A$3 billion Aurukun bauxite mine and East Coast alumina refinery project in Western Cape York, Australia, subject to the outcome of a two year feasibility study announced on Friday.
