Alan Rose AO

Alan is a lawyer and policy adviser.  He had a distinguished career in the Australian public sector for over 34 years. For 13 years he headed three Australian government departments / agencies (Community Services, Attorney-General’s and the Australian Law Reform Commission). In each of these positions and as a former Deputy Secretary, First Assistant Secretary and Assistant Secretary for over 12 years in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Alan contributed significantly to changes in federal administration.

Most importantly, this was achieved through professionalising the Attorney-General’s legal practice, pressing for federal government workplace relations changes to embrace performance-based contract employment, and market testing of substantial areas of traditional in-house service provision, particularly professional service provision to government for which he was awarded an AO in 1994.

Alan is Chair of the Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal.
